Welcome to our latest team interview. Today, we spotlight Martin, a dynamic software developer at Tapkey. A self-taught professional with an appetite for continuous learning, Martin has been an integral part of our team for over six months. Juggling both frontend and backend responsibilities, he exemplifies modern versatility in the tech landscape. Balancing an enthusiastic work ethic with personal interests, Martin’s story offers an engaging blend of tech insights and personal perseverance. Let’s delve into the life and thoughts of Martin, a committed geek, gym enthusiast, and culinary aficionado.
What does your role involve?
As a software developer, I actively participate in both frontend and backend aspects of software creation.
What aspects of your job do you appreciate the most?
There are a few elements I appreciate about my job. Primarily, I enjoy the autonomy it offers. Additionally, having the opportunity to keep up with the latest technology trends, applying them effectively, and observing their direct impact on the products I work on is gratifying.
What do you find most challenging about your job?
The most challenging aspect for me is maintaining a sound work-life balance. I’m passionate about programming whether it is a new widget for smartwatch, app that make my life easier or POCs with new technology. I often find myself engrossed in debugging or work-related tasks during my leisure hours.
What is the most significant career lesson you’ve learned so far?
Two key lessons stand out for me. Firstly, being a self-taught developer, I’ve learned that all skills are attainable with time and effort. Secondly, investing time in automating repetitive, mundane tasks is a long-term time-saver and efficiency booster.
How does Tapkey differentiate from other employers?
I appreciate the efficient meeting culture at Tapkey. Compared to my experiences at larger organizations, where often meetings could be condensed into emails, I enjoy the opportunity to self-manage effectively here. We prioritize open communication and focusing on the task at hand, reducing unnecessary bureaucratic processes.
How do you like to spend your time when you’re not working?
When not working, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, hitting the gym, and furthering my coding skills.
Could you share a fun fact about yourself?
I have misophonia: the sound of dry broom sweeping sends me into an immediate state of discomfort. On a lighter note, I used to be a rugby player and participated in the Europe Championship.
Do you have a guiding quote or personal mantra?
I resonate with Winston Churchill’s words, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”
Could you describe yourself in three words?
I would describe myself as a geek, gym enthusiast, and food lover.
What is one thing you can’t live without?
Physical activity is an integral part of my life.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Telekinesis or the ability to fly would be my superpower of choice.
What’s your favorite book or podcast?
While I don’t have a favorite book, one that made a lasting impression on me was “Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman, which I read about 15 years ago.
