The pandemic has seen the emergence of twelve megatrends and changed the trajectory of others. These trends represent complex change dynamics and serve as a model for the transformation of the world. In doing so, they are signposts for a new way of thinking among consumers and therefore also among companies, ultimately affecting the actions of every organization. In this blog post, we would like to highlight two major drivers of change that are also leaving their mark on the access control sector: security and neo-ecology.
Security Megatrend
Security is a particularly paradoxical megatrend. New risks and dangers are reported again and again, yet the perception that the world is becoming increasingly insecure is misleading. In fact, we’re living in the safest of times. Nevertheless, we now perceive uncertainties more intensely, especially in times of global upheaval such as the coronavirus pandemic.
The issue of security in this context must also be considered with the aspect of health in mind. People don’t want to have to be on site handing out keys and granting physical access to offices and buildings. As a result, companies are generally more open to using new technologies, e.g. when it comes to innovative access control solutions to curb the spread of the coronavirus. For this reason, now is a good time to upgrade access control to a modern, future-proof system.
However, it’s not only physical security that plays an important role; digital security is crucial in this regard as well. Tapkey takes this issue very seriously. That’s why we’re committed to responsibly disclosing security-related issues and continuously working with security experts to fix them and protect our customers. Although everyone is encouraged to report vulnerabilities, not a single security vulnerability has been discovered at Tapkey to date.
Neo-Ecology Megatrend
The second megatrend at which we would like to take a closer look is neo-ecology. It establishes a new set of values that extends into every area of our day-to-day lives. Increased environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility among consumers play a major role here. This way, digital access control can also be part of sustainable projects. The keyword here is: access as a feature. Tapkey technology enables partners to seamlessly integrate smartphone-based access into existing solutions, e.g. car sharing solutions, which enable the sharing of vehicles and thus reduce the burden on the environment. In the car sharing sector, Tapkey has been working with WITTE Digital for quite some time, allowing customers to obtain authorised access to a vehicle on their smartphone and open the car with an app.
One use case, for example, could be a sustainable solution for waste management, known as smart waste management. This involves smart devices that will make waste bins more intelligent in the future. A sensor provides information about the fill level, temperature, lid position and number of lid openings. This way, mobile access authorisations can be granted, and certain people can open the waste container using their smartphone. This enables you to bid farewell to production and the annoying issue of keys.
But we’ve also thought about sustainability internally and optimised our consumption and processes with our employees. For example, we’ve reduced paper consumption in our office as much as possible and are constantly working to optimise our digital processes. Of course, we’re aware that this is only a small step in the right direction, But you have to start somewhere, right?
